Cheri Amour Mahan.
Cheri Amour Mahan is a Massachusetts mother of two, the wife of Danny Mahan, an author, and the rare creator who is also the source. She did not set out to write a television series — she set out to keep her son.
Beginning in 2019 and across seven years, Cheri taught herself special education law from her kitchen table in Weston: FERPA · IDEA · 603 CMR 28. She filed public records requests. She sat through IEP meetings designed to outlast her. She watched a school district she had trusted quietly decide who her son was — and refused to let them write his ending.
Today, her son Shane Patrick Mahan is a defensive lineman at Dean College, jersey #61, majoring in Business Management. The boy administrators tried to label is a college athlete. The mother they tried to manage is an author. And the system that picked her, picked the wrong mother.
"I wrote the book so other mothers would know they were not imagining it. I want to write the show so the country will know it, too."
— Cheri Amour Mahan
Her memoir, They Picked The Wrong Mother, was published in 2024 and continues to gather a quiet, growing readership of parents, advocates, and educators. The limited series is its natural next chapter.
